Greenfield is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 35,476 at the 2000 census.

Greenfield was originally created as the Town of Kinnickinnic around 1839. On Feb. 19, 1841, the name of the town was changed to Greenfield, taking its name from the name of the Post Office in the Town of Kinnickinnic. Greenfield was the final municipality in Milwaukee County to incorporate, and was the final municipality to leave the Town form of government in 1957. This was done to prevent total annexation by the City of Milwaukee. Before 1957, Milwaukee slowly nibbled away at Greenfield's land.[3]
Greenfield is located at (42.963034, -87.995943)[4]. The Root River flows through the western part of the city.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 square miles (29.9 km²), of which, 11.6 square miles (29.9 km²) of it is land and 0.09% is water.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 35,476 people, 15,697 households, and 9,167 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,072.5 people per square mile (1,185.9/km²). There were 16,203 housing units at an average density of 1,403.3 per square mile (541.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.72% White, 0.98% African American, 0.44% Native American, 2.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.88% of the population.
There were 15,697 households out of which 22.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the city the population was spread out with 18.9% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $44,230, and the median income for a family was $56,272. Males had a median income of $40,056 versus $30,212 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,755. About 3.4% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.
